Vashon High School Hosts Third Annual Black History Speaker Series

Students at Vashon High School celebrated Black History Month with the school’s third annual Black History Speaker Series, welcoming a group of distinguished guests who shared their professional experiences, cultural knowledge, and personal insights with students.

Throughout the month of February, each speaker brought a unique perspective designed to inspire students, encourage pride in heritage, and help them explore possible career paths.

The series featured the following speakers:

Andre Anderson — Motivational Speaker

Mr. Anderson spoke with students about real-life situations and conflict resolution, encouraging them to make positive choices and approach challenges with resilience and determination.

Wade “Cito” Wheelington III — Marvel Character Content Creator

Wheelington, a Marvel character content creator who currently resides in Japan, discussed his creative work and the opportunities available in content creation and Japanese interpretation, giving students insight into careers that combine creativity and global perspectives.

Carmen R. Guynn — CEO/Director, Almas Del Ritmo Dance Company

Ms. Guynn shared the history and cultural roots of salsa dancing, highlighting its African and Afro-Latino influences while demonstrating how dance connects culture, history, and artistic expression.

Rufus Tate Jr., Esq. — Trial Attorney, Circuit Attorney’s Office

Mr. Tate spoke with students about teenagers and the judicial system, focusing on prevention, accountability, and understanding the legal process.

Charles Murphy — Musician and Cultural Educator

Mr. Murphy introduced students to the history of African musical instruments, including the kora, and explained the important role music plays in storytelling and cultural traditions.

The Black History Speaker Series continues to be an important tradition at Vashon High School, connecting students with professionals and cultural leaders who help bring Black history and achievement to life.
